Monex Canada Featured on Canadian Dollar Weakness Amid U.S. Dollar Strength

Monex Canada was featured in an article examining why the Canadian dollar has weakened against the U.S. dollar, despite earlier expectations that the loonie would strengthen in 2026.

The article highlighted how geopolitical uncertainty tied to the Iran war, stronger-than-expected U.S. economic data and shifting expectations for U.S. Federal Reserve rate hikes have supported the U.S. dollar. While Canada’s softer labour market and weaker GDP growth have added pressure, analysts noted that the loonie’s decline has been driven largely by broader U.S. dollar strength.

Nick Rees, Head of Macro Research at Monex Canada, provided insight into the Canadian dollar’s recent underperformance, noting that while all G10 currencies have weakened against the U.S. dollar, “the loonie is the worst-performing.” He also suggested the Canadian dollar could see improvement later in the year if domestic economic indicators strengthen and geopolitical and trade uncertainties ease.
